Trump says Canada’s Bombardier cannot sell in US unless it builds there

On September 7, President Donald Trump announced that Canadian private jet manufacturer Bombardier would no longer be allowed to sell its planes in the United States unless it begins manufacturing in the country. Trump urged in a Truth Social post that if Bombardier wants access to the US market, it must build there and stop treating America like a "piggybank."

The dispute comes amid a series of trade disagreements between Washington and Ottawa, part of Trump's second-term economic policies, including a worldwide tariff wall. Canada plans to retaliate with tariffs against the United States on Tuesday. The White House declined to comment on how Trump would enforce the action or the measures he would take to prevent Bombardier deliveries.

Bombardier's jets comply with the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade deal negotiated by Trump. However, U.S. aerospace analyst Richard Aboulafia believes that most business jet customers would not cancel Bombardier orders and doubts Trump's ability to stop the sales. Bombardier, based in Montreal, has an American workforce of 3,500 and relies on 2,800 U.S. suppliers, with factories and service centers in the country.

The company added its sixth U.S. service center and manufactures wings for its Global 8000 jet in Texas. About half of Bombardier's 5,100 aircraft are in the US.
