Trump suggests renaming New Mexico state ‘New America’

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump proposed renaming the state of New Mexico to "New America," an idea that quickly drew widespread ridicule. The suggestion was made in a post on his social media, where he claimed that many people had suggested the change, describing it as "so much more prestigious and beautiful." Trump's White House reposted an image depicting the word "Mexico" crossed out, replaced with "America."

However, the governor of New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham, firmly rejected the notion, stating that the state's name has been in use since before the United States came into existence. She suggested that Trump's proposal was aimed at diverting public attention from issues like high gas prices.

This proposal followed Trump's recent actions to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America" amid a trade dispute with Canada. Recently, Trump had also suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz to "Trump Strait" during the ongoing Iran conflict, though he later seemed to distance himself from that idea. In 2025, he renamed the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America," a move firmly rejected by Mexico. Canada had similarly rejected attempts to rename Lake Ontario.
