Trump says Canada’s Bombardier cannot sell in US unless it builds there

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on August 7 that Canadian private jet manufacturer Bombardier would no longer be permitted to sell its planes in the United States unless the company began manufacturing in the country. Trump criticized Bombardier's products, stating they were not good enough and that Canada was treating America like a "piggybank."

The trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada has escalated amid Trump's broader economic policies, including a global tariff wall, which have faced criticism from some US trading partners. Canada is expected to introduce a series of counter tariffs against the U.S. on Tuesday. Bombardier's jets comply with the USMCA trade deal, which Trump helped implement, and most use US engines produced by Honeywell Aerospace and GE Aerospace.

The company has a significant presence in the U.S., employing 3,500 workers and relying on 2,800 US suppliers. Bombardier has a US$109.2 billion trade surplus with the U.S. and benefits from its global integrated aerospace and defence sector.
