NDC reacts to attack on Peter Obi’s convoy in Benue

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned the alleged attack on Peter Obi's convoy as he visited Benue State. The party's National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, stated that Obi's convoy was allegedly blocked by a group of suspected thugs who prevented him from entering the Yelwata community. According to NDC reports, the assailants were led by an aide to the Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, and were armed with dangerous weapons.

The NDC expressed deep concern over the obstruction of Obi's visit, which was intended solely to mourn with grieving families and offer solidarity to victims of the horrific killings in Yelwata. Over 270 people were reportedly killed in the incident. The party noted that Obi arrived in Benue this morning at 9 a.m. with the intention of visiting the affected community but was stopped by the thugs who were chanting "Peter Obi, go back."

The NDC finds the incident deeply troubling and condemnable, stating that a visit intended for mourning and offering support was obstructed in such a manner. They emphasized that Mr. Obi came to Benue not for political reasons but to show support to the grieving families and listen to their experiences. At a time when unity and mourning are crucial, any actions that deepen divisions must be avoided.

The NDC believes that citizens of Benue and all Nigerians deserve to live peacefully, travel safely, and farm their lands without fear. They call for a government that prioritizes the protection of human life above all else. Despite the denial of access to the community, the NDC remains committed to restoring the fundamental responsibility of government – the protection of every Nigerian's life.

The party has called upon the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to immediately investigate the incident, bring the perpetrators to justice, and ensure the safety of all citizens and leaders who seek to show solidarity in times of grief.
