TISS Student Death: AISF Seeks Independent Probe, Raises Questions Over Emergency Medical Facilities At Deonar Campus

Mumbai: The All India Students’ Federation (AISF) has called for an independent investigation into the death of a postgraduate student at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Deonar, following allegations of inadequate emergency medical facilities. P. Janarthanan, 26, died after suffering a cardiac arrest due to breathlessness during a class.

AISF claims no ambulance was available on campus, and he had to be taken via private vehicle to a hospital 20 minutes away. The student organisation asserts this raises serious questions about TISS’s preparedness for medical emergencies, especially given its focus on public health and health administration. AISF demands TISS publicly disclose its emergency medical arrangements, including ambulance availability, trained personnel, first-aid facilities, protocols, and response times.

They have also called for 24/7 ambulance services and emergency medical care on campus. The student body seeks a broader review of emergency facilities across educational institutions in Mumbai and nationally, urging responsibility be placed on institutions rather than individual students or faculty. They extend condolences to Janarthanan’s family and the TISS community.
