Gasum opens new biogas filling station in the Port of Trondheim, Norway

Gasum has opened its thirteenth biogas filling station in Norway, situated centrally in the Port of Trondheim. This move is aimed at enhancing the availability of renewable fuels for heavy vehicles in Trøndelag and along the E6 highway northwards. The station's strategic location near the E6 highway and the port area, a significant logistics hub, ensures easy access for both local and national carriers.

Gasum's first biogas filling station in Trondheim was established in Tiller back in 2021. With the growing demand for renewable fuels, this new addition strengthens the region's capacity and supply of biogas. It is an integral part of Gasum's expanding national network of filling stations along major roads, strategically placed to cater to heavy transport heading north from Trondheim.

The station's opening is crucial as it ensures consistent availability, enabling more carriers to utilize biogas in their daily operations. Biogas, derived from waste materials such as food waste, biological waste, and manure, offers a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels. On average, it can cut emissions by 95% throughout its life cycle when manure is used.

Moreover, biogas vehicles contribute to improved local air quality by emitting lower levels of nitrogen oxides than conventional fuel vehicles. The newly opened station offers both compressed and liquefied biogas, making it compatible with various types of biogas vehicles. In line with Norway's ambitious climate goals, the transport sector, which accounts for about a third of CO2 emissions, aims to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and 70–75% by 2035.

Given that road transport constitutes around half of these emissions, improving their sustainability through alternatives like biogas is a key step towards achieving these targets. The gas filling station is located at Pier II 6 of the Port of Trondheim.
