Volkswagen finds defence future for German plant amid major overhaul

Volkswagen has reached an agreement to transform one of its German plants into a defense production facility, marking a significant step in the automaker's effort to restructure struggling sites. The factory, located in Osnabrück, will be sold to Israel's Aurelius Capital and Lower Saxony, preserving approximately 1,400 of the 1,800 jobs at the site.

This move comes as Volkswagen prepares for a major overhaul to cut jobs and streamline its structure, responding to weak demand, high costs, and increased competition from China. The factory's production is set to end in 2027, with an initial anchor project involving cooperation with Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. This collaboration could lead to the manufacture of air defence systems for Germany and Europe, potentially paving the way for further deals.

Other potential projects include converting VW Amarok pick-up trucks into military vehicles, with Polish defense firm WB Group possibly converting MAN vehicles owned by Volkswagen's Traton business. Defence production is increasingly being viewed as a solution for underutilized automotive plants, with other companies like Rheinmetall and Continental also exploring similar strategies.

Lower Saxony's engagement is expected to mirror its investment in the Meyer Werft shipyard in 2024, where it allocated €200 million ($232 million) for a 40% stake.
