Bangladesh dengue fever surge strains hospitals as case numbers pass 42,000

Bangladesh faces a worsening dengue fever crisis, with over 42,000 people hospitalized and 117 deaths reported this year, according to health ministry data. The outbreak intensified in September, causing a surge in hospital admissions, including 1,558 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest daily tally so far. The disease, which can cause severe fever, headaches, and potentially fatal complications, has spread rapidly, raising concerns about a possible intensification in the coming weeks.

Medical experts warn that September could see even higher hospitalization rates, potentially exceeding 30,000 this month, if current trends persist. Professor Kabirul Bashar, a medical entomologist, predicts the worst month for dengue infections this year may be September. The healthcare system is already burdened by a nationwide measles outbreak, which has claimed nearly 1,000 lives.

Health authorities warn that patients must be closely monitored post-fever to prevent dangerous complications. The government has intensified prevention efforts, urging citizens to remove standing water and participate in mosquito-control measures. However, experts stress that these efforts must be evidence-based and target actual mosquito breeding sites to be effective.
