Komnas HAM: Recurring MBG Poisonings Put Children's Lives at Risk

Indonesia’s National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) has expressed concern over repeated food poisoning incidents associated with President Prabowo Subianto’s Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program. Uli Parulian Sihombing, a Komnas HAM commissioner, stated that these recurring cases raise serious concerns about the program's safety for children receiving meals.

The incidents have become almost routine, according to Uli, who warned that without strict daily enforcement of food sanitation standards, the program could lose its moral legitimacy and become a threat to human safety and dignity. Hundreds of students from Islamic boarding schools and other institutions in Sidoarjo, Rembang, Jombang, and Surakarta have been affected by the poisoning incidents.

Komnas HAM has called for comprehensive remedies, including transparent epidemiological investigations, fair sanctions, and guarantees against recurrence. The commission recommends suspending MBG kitchens at affected locations, conducting a thorough evaluation to determine causes and implement corrective measures, and ensuring victims receive effective remedies, including physical and mental recovery.

Komnas HAM also urges the police and the Food and Drug Authority to enforce laws transparently and fairly against all parties involved, while coordinating with provincial and local governments, the Health Ministry, and BPOM to strengthen oversight throughout food preparation and distribution. The commission emphasizes that improving children's nutrition should not compromise their health, safety, and basic rights.
