Bangladesh dengue outbreak accelerates, straining hospitals

Bangladesh is experiencing a rapidly escalating dengue outbreak, with 42,590 people hospitalized and 117 deaths reported this year, as the surge puts immense strain on hospitals and raises fears of the disease's potential intensification. In the past 24 hours alone, at least four dengue patients succumbed to the illness and 1,558 others sought hospitalization, marking the highest daily admission record for the year so far.

Dengue, a mosquito-borne disease causing fever, severe headaches, and potentially fatal complications, has shown a sharp rise in recent weeks, reigniting concerns following the country's deadliest dengue outbreak in 2023. The increasing number of cases has further burdened a healthcare system already struggling with a nationwide measles outbreak that has claimed nearly 1,000 lives.

Health experts also caution that September could prove even more severe than August, which saw the highest monthly dengue caseload of the year.
