Palestinian football returns amid joy, grief

Palestinian football returned this week after a three-year hiatus, amid a mix of joy and grief. Palestinian security forces escorted the Palestine and Saudi Arabia teams to the Al-Ram stadium for the 2022 World Cup Asian qualifying match. The return to the sport was bittersweet for Khalil Jadallah, a Palestinian sports commentator who had mourned the loss of 1,014 Palestinian athletes during the Oct 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel and the subsequent war in Gaza.

The tournament, named the 1,000 Martyrs Cup, honored the fallen athletes and featured over 200 teams from the West Bank, Gaza, and refugee camps in Lebanon.

During the game, children carried a Palestinian flag wrapped to resemble a dead body and unfurled it across the center circle, playing the national anthem. The tournament's unveiling included a memorial bearing the names of the deceased athletes. The opening match, between Jabal Al-Mukaber Club and Shabab Al-Khaleel SC, was marked by a minute of silence for the dead, followed by enthusiastic support from the crowd.

Maysan Suleiman, a 35-year-old attendee, came to commemorate the martyrs and support the spirit of the tournament, seeing it as a symbol of Palestinian unity. The event was held simultaneously in Gaza, where Israeli strikes had damaged football fields and displaced many people. Khalil Matar, a player from Gaza, emphasized the tournament's role in restoring life for Palestinian athletes and fostering national unity.

Despite logistical challenges, the participants remained determined to continue developing young talents within the sport.
