Kyiv protests new UN map separating Crimea from Ukraine

Ukraine expressed dissatisfaction with a recent U.N. resolution that depicted the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula as separate from the country on a world map. Lawmaker Kira Rudik stated on September 5 that Ukraine would not support the resolution, arguing that Crimea is an integral part of Ukraine. Ukraine was one of only seven nations to abstain from voting in favor of the resolution on September 4, which aimed to better reflect Africa's size relative to Europe and North America.

The resolution, proposed by Togo and supported by the African Union, was adopted by 164 countries. The U.S. was the sole country to vote against it, not due to border concerns but because of the map being part of a "radical ideological project" promoting reparations. Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014, but it remains a Ukrainian territory under international law.

The Equal Earth projection, which the map uses, shows Crimea in gray, distinguishing it from the rest of Ukraine. Ukraine's objection to the map's depiction was deemed "wholly unacceptable" by the country. Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, and Serbia were the other five abstaining countries. The EU's U.N. delegation supported the resolution but emphasized that it does not address sovereignty, territorial status, or the internationally recognized borders of states.
