U.S. Envoys Make First Kyiv Visit Amid Ukraine War Peace Push

U.S. peace envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff visited Kyiv on Sunday, marking their first trip to the capital since being dispatched by the Trump administration to push for an end to Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. The envoys convened with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other top Ukrainian officials, following a prior meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow the previous day.

Despite the envoys' efforts, no significant breakthroughs were reported in resolving the conflict that has raged for four-and-a-half years. Both the U.S. and Russian delegations held three hours of talks on Saturday in Moscow but did not achieve a significant breakthrough. Reports suggest that the U.S. has a fresh proposal on the table, though details have not been disclosed.

The Ukrainian leader expressed optimism about the prospects for peace, stating that a window of opportunity exists before the U.S. shifts its focus to the upcoming presidential election. Zelenskiy emphasized the need for security guarantees and a dignified post-war peace, advocating for the inclusion of European representatives in future negotiations.

The envoys' visit to Kyiv, which has been sought by Ukrainian leadership for some time, has been greeted with hope from the city's residents, who have endured heavy bombardments. While key issues, such as the status of the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbas, remain contentious, Ukraine insists on security guarantees from its allies, including the U.S., to deter potential future invasions.
