Trump envoys arrive in Kyiv for 1st Ukraine visit

United States envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrived in Kyiv on Sunday for their inaugural visit to the Ukrainian capital, just a day after engaging in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, aiming to bring an end to the four-year conflict between the two nations. This marks the first time that the U.S. President's business partner Witkoff and son-in-law Kushner have held talks in Kyiv, a city that has been repeatedly targeted by Russian strikes since the ongoing war began in 2022.

The American envoys are expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. An AFP reporter observed the arrival of the U.S. delegation via train in Kyiv. Their primary objective is to revive negotiations towards resolving Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II, following a period of growing tensions. Over 300,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

In a statement to AFP, a White House official revealed that Kushner and Witkoff met with Putin on Saturday to further President Trump's peace agenda in the Russia-Ukraine War. They discussed concrete plans for subsequent steps, which are anticipated to be revealed in the coming weeks.
