Tak perlu adakan PRU16 lebih awal, kata Loke

DAP Deputy President Loke Siew Fook has stated that the Prime Minister does not need to yield to any pressure to dissolve Parliament, even as he enjoys the support of a majority in the House. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's coalition government was formed through consensus after the 2015 general election, with a five-year mandate.

There are still 15 months left in the current term, which should be used to carry out the promised reforms approved by the Cabinet. For DAP, as long as the Prime Minister has a majority, there is no need to bow to any pressure to dissolve Parliament, he said after presiding over the DAP Women's Congress here. Therefore, we will use these 15 months to implement all the promised reforms, including some constitutional amendments approved by the Cabinet, such as separating the roles of the Attorney-General and the Public Prosecutor and limiting the Prime Minister's term to two terms.

On Thursday, Barisan Nasional Chairman Zahid Hamidi was reportedly quoted as saying it would be better to hold PRU16 earlier than waiting for Parliament to finish its term next year. However, he added that the Umno leadership is also ready if the Prime Minister chooses to serve out the full five-year term. Anwar was reportedly open to the idea of earlier polls, but the government is currently focusing on the economy, public welfare, and fighting corruption.
