eThekwini prepaid electricity purchase points all offline

The City of eThekwini is currently experiencing technical difficulties with its prepaid electricity vending system. This outage means that customers are unable to purchase prepaid electricity tokens through various channels such as banking apps, retail outlets, and mobile vending machines. The municipality attributes the fault to an internet service provider connectivity problem affecting third-party vending channels.

According to Spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila, the issue is being caused by an internet outage on the side of the vendor, and the city is working to resolve it in collaboration with the relevant vendors.

Residents are advised to visit the Routunda Customer care Centre, located at 1 Jelf Taylor Crescent, Stamford Hill, where they can purchase the necessary electricity tokens. However, Mzila advises that this particular customer center only accepts cash payments and operates until 19:00 on Sundays. Jay Lovey Govender, an executive member of the LGE 2026 | eThekwini Ratepayers and Residents Association, has criticized the municipality's service delivery, highlighting ongoing issues with the billing system, water supply, and electricity services as key challenges.
