Building collapse in New Delhi kills 1 and traps dozens of others

A five-story building collapsed in New Delhi on Sunday, resulting in one death and the trapping of around 30 to 40 people, officials reported. The structure, which served as a boys’ hostel, came down in Satya Niketan, an area renowned for its high-end student accommodations near Delhi University. Abhilash Malik, a fire officer, stated that approximately 30 to 40 individuals remained entangled in the rubble.

Lawmaker Anil Sharma confirmed that some victims had been rescued, while several remained trapped, desperately attempting to contact emergency services. Rescue teams comprising police, firefighters, and personnel from India’s disaster response agency were actively digging through the debris to reach those trapped inside. Earthmovers were employed to clear the debris and facilitate the rescue efforts.

Although the cause of the collapse remains undetermined, building collapses frequently occur in certain parts of India during the monsoon season, typically from June to September. During this period, heavy or prolonged rainfall can weaken aging structures, making them susceptible to collapse.
