Rescuers in Nepal pull a Chinese national and a woman alive 10 days after devastating floods

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Rescuers in Nepal successfully pulled a Chinese national and a woman alive from the ruins of devastating floods that struck the nation 10 days ago, officials announced on Saturday. The Chinese worker was extracted from a hydropower tunnel, while the woman was rescued from her home in Nuwakot town. This marks the third individual among the workers who were pulled alive from the Trishuli hydropower project.

Two Nepalese workers were also rescued earlier from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower plant. The joint rescue team comprising Nepalese military personnel and South Korean disaster experts managed to save the Chinese national from a 225-meter tunnel, with the individual receiving a health assessment during his helicopter evacuation.

Images revealed rescuers carrying the man out of the tunnel, with an army medic monitoring his condition during the flight. A photo released by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV confirmed the man's safe extraction. Meanwhile, the woman was airlifted to Kathmandu, her rescue captured on camera as rescuers wrapped her in a gray blanket.

The floods, which are believed to have been triggered by a glacier collapse on August 26, have claimed at least 1,300 lives and left over 5,000 people still missing across 12 hydropower projects in Nepal.
