Rescuers continue grim search for Nepal flood survivors

Rescuers in Nepal are intensifying their grim search for flood survivors, following the tragic death toll crossing 1,200. The rescue operations gained momentum after two hydropower workers were miraculously rescued from the Trishuli tunnel, after being trapped for nine days. The disaster occurred due to a wall of water and mud, caused by a massive glacial and rock collapse near the China-Nepal border on August 26.

As of now, 1,294 bodies have been recovered in Nepal, while 5,053 people are still missing. In China, 31 people have been killed, and 531 are still missing, raising the overall death toll to 1,325, with 5,584 people reported missing. The Nepali Army's spokesman, Raja Ram Basnet, stated that the search and rescue operations are ongoing at the Trishuli 3A tunnel as well as other sites.

Additionally, experts from India, China, Australia, and South Korea have joined the Nepali rescuers in their efforts to find survivors inside the blocked tunnels. With morgues overflowing, 1,030 bodies have been buried in mass graves after DNA samples were taken for future identification by family members. Prime Minister Balendra Shah promised to provide safe and comfortable accommodation for the thousands of people displaced by the disaster, who are currently living in temporary relief camps.
