Firefighters contain blaze near George Town’s Chew Jetty saving nearby petrol station

Early today, a devastating fire engulfed the premises of several businesses at Chew Jetty in George Town, leaving business owners grappling with substantial losses. Hong Jing Lian, a 60-year-old car-painter who has operated his shop there since 1997, suffered extensive damage as everything within his shop was destroyed. The fire was reported to have ignited at approximately 1am, believed to have originated from a neighboring premises before spreading rapidly due to the presence of numerous flammable items.

Hong estimated his losses to be around RM1 million, comprising three vehicles sent for painting - a Suzuki Swift, a Mercedes-Benz C-Class and a BMW. Closed-circuit television footage suggested that his shop was unaffected until around 12.59am, after which the fire broke out. Hong was alerted to the fire by friends, who called him and prompted his swift response to the scene from his home in Farlim.

Another victim, T-shirt printing operator Toh Aik Aun, 50, also bore the brunt of the inferno. With his business established at the location for nearly three decades, Toh too received a call about the fire at around 1.08am. Within moments, the flames engulfed his premises, consuming hundreds of unsold T-shirts that had yet to reach customers.

As assessments of the damage are underway, Toh has yet to determine his next steps. The courageous firefighters managed to thwart the blaze from consuming a nearby petrol station and residential area. The origin of the fire and the comprehensive extent of the losses are currently under investigation.
