Emergency remains: Uggah says Serian still under haze alert despite API improvement

KUCHING, Sept 5 — Despite its Air Pollutant Index (API) reading improving, Serian is still under the haze emergency according to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC). SDMC chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas revealed that the API in Serian was recorded at 334 at 10am, placing the area in the hazardous category, and fell to 273 by 2pm, making it very unhealthy.

Uggah stated that SDMC would closely monitor the API over the next three days to check for any changes, especially if it rises above 500. The committee will advise the Sarawak Premier and Prime Minister on the emergency status before any decision is made. The emergency declaration was made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim following the worsening haze and API readings exceeding 500.

Despite the emergency, public offices and workplaces in Serian may continue operations, but with health precautions in place. The SDMC is monitoring air quality, weather, hotspots, and haze movement across Sarawak to take appropriate action. The public is advised to avoid outdoor activities and wear N95 or three-ply masks if exposure cannot be avoided.

Children, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups are urged to take additional care due to increased susceptibility to haze effects. The SDMC will continue monitoring and issuing updates as needed, prioritizing the health, safety, and wellbeing of Sarawak's people.
