Milei escalates Argentina’s Falklands dispute with UK as Trump hints at US policy shift

Argentine President Javier Milei intensified his country's conflict with the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands on Thursday. He announced plans to prevent an oil exploration project near the British-controlled archipelago and praised U.S. President Donald Trump for hinting that Washington could reconsider its neutral stance on the islands' sovereignty.

Milei attributed Trump's comments as evidence of his strong bond with the U.S. president, which some political opponents view as too submissive. Milei stated that the United States was considering changing its position because it recognizes Argentina as a dependable partner with common Western values, asserting that such a partnership could be highly beneficial for Argentina in the future.

In a televised address, Milei unveiled aggressive measures to impede the Sea Lion oil project, situated approximately 140 miles north of the Falklands. The project, being developed by British firm Rockhopper Exploration and Israeli company Navitas Petroleum, is set to commence drilling operations in 2028, which Argentina views as an illicit exploitation of resources within its territorial waters.

Milei pledged to impose stricter sanctions on companies involved in the offshore drilling and allocated additional funding for a naval base in Argentina's southern region, Tierra del Fuego, to strengthen the nation's military presence near the disputed islands. Milei's strategic shift in focus to the Falklands marks a notable departure from his previous stance, as he has faced criticism for fostering ties with Britain and praising British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who led the 1982 Falklands War.

The ongoing sovereignty dispute remains a contentious issue in Argentina, deeply rooted in national identity and political identity, transcending partisan lines. Milei, who is up for re-election next year, sees the Falklands as a politically advantageous issue to regain support. Argentina argues that it inherited sovereignty over the islands from Spain and contends that Britain has illegally occupied them since 1833, while Britain maintains that the islanders have consistently desired to remain a British overseas territory.

The United States has traditionally adopted a neutral position on the matter, acknowledging Britain's de facto administration of the islands. Trump's recent remarks, in which he hinted at a potential U.S. review of its stance on the dispute, added further complexity to an already tense transatlantic relationship.
