Milei says ‘winds of change’ favour Argentina in Falklands row

Argentine President Javier Milei declared on Thursday that "winds of change" are favorable to Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands, citing Washington's willingness to reconsider its neutrality on the dispute. The islands, known to Argentines as Las Malvinas, were the subject of a 10-week war between Britain and Argentina in 1982.

Milei vowed that Argentina would not stand idly by if a British-Israeli oil project near the islands proceeded without the country's consent. The president announced sanctions on firms linked to oil extraction in Argentine territory under British control, accusing such companies of violating a UN resolution that forbids unilateral actions in the islands.

Milei's comments came after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington was reviewing its stance on the Falkland Islands, a move that Milei interpreted as a vindication of his policies and support for the Trump administration. Milei also accused Britain of being on a "path of decline" due to multiple crises, and he filed a lawsuit on Tuesday to halt the controversial oil project.
