Trump $1 coin makes him first living president on US currency in a century

Donald Trump's portrait has been featured on a US $1 coin, marking the first instance of a living president appearing on American currency in over a century. The US Mint unveiled the commemorative coin on Wednesday, coinciding with the country's 250th anniversary celebration. The coin proudly displays "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," alongside Trump's likeness.

Despite its golden hue, the coin does not contain actual gold; it is primarily composed of copper, with traces of zinc, manganese, and nickel. The US Mint priced the coins at $61 for a roll of 25 and $154.50 for a bag of 100, though they quickly sold out online. The coin was specifically designed to celebrate the historic milestone, with the US Mint stating it will become a distinctive addition to modern coin collections.

While the coins are being sold at US Mint stores in Washington DC, they are not currently available on the mint's website. The Trump administration has also leveraged the Thayer Amendment of 1866, which generally prohibits living figures on US notes, to justify the coin's release.
