Trump $1 coin makes him first living president on US currency in a century

Donald Trump's portrait has been featured on a US $1 coin for the first time in a century, marking a historic milestone on America's 250th anniversary. The US Mint launched the special-edition coin to celebrate the nation's landmark anniversary, featuring Trump alongside the words "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST". The coins, priced at $61 for a roll of 25 and $154.50 for a bag of 100, quickly sold out on the mint's website.

Despite being made of 88.5% copper and zinc, the coins do not contain any actual gold. While federal law prohibits the printing of US money with the image of a living person, the Trump administration cited the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 to justify the release of the new $1 coins. The Thayer Amendment of 1866, which traditionally bans the portrait of living people on US notes, does not apply to coins.
