King Charles to host Oman’s Sultan Haitham amid hostilities in Gulf

Britain's King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to host Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman at Windsor Castle from October 20-22 for a state visit, according to Buckingham Palace. The visit aims to highlight the strong ties between the UK and Oman, as well as Oman's crucial role in Middle Eastern diplomacy. The timing of the visit coincides with heightened tensions in the US-Iran conflict.

Oman has been working to mediate the restoration of commercial shipping in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for global oil and gas transportation. The kingdom has maintained robust defence and security partnerships with the UK, while also keeping diplomatic lines open with nations in conflict. The bilateral relationship encompasses trade, education, culture, defence, and diplomacy.

Prior to the upcoming visit, Sultan Haitham met with King Charles at Windsor Castle in July of last year, followed by a private meeting with then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London. During their discussions, both countries pledged to bolster cooperation in defense, energy, and technology. With this month's state visit, the UK aims to underscore its commitment to sustaining a key relationship in the Gulf amidst ongoing regional strife.
