RUU had tempoh PM siap untuk dibentang di Dewan Rakyat, kata Azalina

The Malaysian Prime Minister's Office has announced that the legislation limiting the tenure of the Prime Minister is ready to be presented for a second reading in the Dewan Rakyat, according to Azalina Othman Said, the Minister of Justice and Legal Reform. However, the final decision on whether the bill will be brought up in the upcoming parliamentary session depends on the Speaker of the House, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Azalina stated that once the tenure limit for the Prime Minister is introduced, it will become a matter of debating the constitutional framework, which necessitates the support of a two-thirds majority of the Members of Parliament. This requirement also applies to bills separating the roles of the Attorney-General and the Prosecutor-General, which similarly require a two-thirds majority.

Azalina urged all Members of Parliament, regardless of their political party, to support these bills as they would help reduce perceptions of political motives behind the proposals. "Therefore, I sincerely hope that Members of the Dewan Rakyat, Dewan Negara, and any political party will take this opportunity into account, as it would bring more benefits than drawbacks for our nation," she said.

Azalina also mentioned that separating the roles of the Attorney-General and the Prosecutor-General is expected to increase confidence in the country's legal system. "I don't want to hear people say that when they are prosecuted, the evidence is as flimsy as a piece of paper or anything else. So, I hope, Allah willing, separating their roles will provide greater confidence, especially when the Prosecutor-General is appointed during the parliamentary process."
