NPP warns Chief Justice’s conduct risks eroding confidence in Judiciary

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed concerns that the Chief Justice's recent remarks may undermine public trust in Ghana's Judiciary. The party argues that the Judiciary must maintain political neutrality, especially when dealing with politically sensitive cases. During a visit to the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), the Chief Justice praised the institution's performance and made remarks questioning Ghana's progress over the past eight years.

He also toured the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), where he expressed satisfaction with the institution's performance. The Chief Justice drew comparisons between the SSNIT's past plans to sell assets like the Labadi Beach Hotel and its current status, expressing wonder at Ghana's decline.

Comparing the current NDC administration to the previous NPP government, the Chief Justice stated his commitment to the success of President John Dramani Mahama's agenda. The NPP asserts that these comments, along with his pledge to support the President's agenda, raise questions about the Judiciary's independence. They question the perception of the public, particularly those involved in legal matters, regarding the possibility that political considerations may influence judicial decisions.

The NPP emphasizes that a Judiciary endorsing a President's agenda would essentially become a "third chamber of Jubilee House," effectively transforming into a political institution rather than an impartial legal body.

The opposition party urges the Chief Justice to retract his comments and distance himself from any perceived political ties. They warn that such behavior could exacerbate public concerns regarding the Judiciary's independence and credibility. The NPP affirms their commitment to protecting the courtroom as the last safe haven for ordinary citizens and vows to resist any attempts to turn it into an instrument of political persecution.
