NPP demands Chief Justice’s resignation over alleged partisan conduct

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the immediate resignation of the Chief Justice, alleging that he has abandoned judicial neutrality and displayed partisan conduct. The NPP expressed shock and disgust over a video showing the Chief Justice making political commentary, suggesting the current ruling party and its appointed officials are performing better than the previous government.

The party stated that such comments are inappropriate for the head of Ghana's Judiciary, considering them partisan political remarks. The NPP accused the Chief Justice of engaging with political appointees of the current government and exhibited a pattern of conduct raising questions about his political neutrality. The party cited Ghana's 1992 Constitution, which establishes the Judiciary as an independent arm of government, requiring judicial officers to act without fear, favor, affection, or ill will.

The NPP also criticized the Chief Justice's support for President John Mahama's agenda, particularly in relation to Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), which targets individuals linked to the opposition. The party alleged that the Judiciary has shown "extraordinary alacrity" in handling politically sensitive cases involving opposition figures while granting more lenient treatment to those aligned with the government.

The NPP further criticized the state of court infrastructure and working conditions within the Judiciary, accusing the Chief Justice of neglecting these issues while engaging more with government agencies. The opposition party vowed to present the Chief Justice's alleged conduct to the public and called on President Mahama to disavow any arrangement concerning the Chief Justice's post-retirement future.
