N.S. woman says her family has lost hundreds of relatives, friends in Nepal floods

A Nepalese woman living in Nova Scotia is devastated by the flash floods that struck her hometown in August. Ang Faulkner's family and friends from Rasuwa district are among the hundreds missing. Faulkner, who hasn't been able to eat or sleep since hearing the news, says she struggled to contact her parents who used a friend's solar panel to make a brief phone call.

Her cousin's wife who ran a hotel in Syabrubesi was swept away as she was having coffee with her husband. His wife was washed away as her cousin saw a massive wave almost as high as a five-story building. Faulkner's aunt and uncle also disappeared while doing housekeeping. A video showed their hotel giving way to the flood. Experts believe a glacial collapse triggered the flooding, and 1,200 deaths have been confirmed with thousands more still missing.

Many families are struggling to find closure, especially since most of the victims were adults whose children are now orphans. Faulkner urges the public to donate to the relief effort through the Government of Nepal Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund.
