ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini outage: What we know so far

On Thursday, a major outage affected all major AI services, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and Grok, leaving thousands of users unable to access these platforms. According to DownDetector, users across various AI platforms began experiencing issues accessing ChatGPT around 11 a.m. ET on Thursday. However, the outage is not limited to OpenAI; users also reported similar problems with Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and Elon Musk's xAI chatbots.

While brief ChatGPT and Claude outages are not uncommon and typically resolve quickly, it is highly unusual for multiple AI services to experience issues simultaneously. ChatGPT's status monitor indicated that there were elevated errors across the platform and Codex. Anthropic's status monitor reported that several of its models, including Mythos/Fable 5.1, Mythos/Fable 5, Opus 5, Opus 4.8, and Opus 4.6, were affected by the outage.

The reason behind the simultaneous outages of these major AI platforms remains unclear, and it is a developing story. Ziff Davis, Mashable's parent company, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in April 2025, alleging that OpenAI infringed on Ziff Davis copyrights during the training and operation of its AI systems.
