ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude face widespread outages; Amazon Web Services also hit

On Thursday, September 3, 2026, major artificial intelligence (AI) platforms such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude faced widespread service disruptions, affecting thousands of users across the globe, as reported by the outage tracking website Downdetector. The outage was not limited to these platforms; Amazon Web Services (AWS) also experienced issues.

Reports of outages started increasing in the evening (IST), with users encountering a variety of problems. These included complete website inaccessibility and internal server errors when trying to generate AI responses. For OpenAI, the tracking site showed a significant surge in reports, with both the ChatGPT web interface and mobile application becoming unresponsive. Google Gemini and Claude AI also faced similar issues, with users receiving Gateway Timeout messages and prompts failing to execute.

OpenAI acknowledged the ongoing problems through its status page, reporting issues and elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex. They were actively investigating the matter. Anthropic identified the cause of the elevated errors on requests to Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5 and was working on a resolution. They later announced that the only models still experiencing issues were Opus 4.8 and Opus 5. The rest of the models had returned to their normal error rates.

The AI platforms have to adhere to specific terms and conditions, including English-language comments in full sentences, no abusive or personal remarks, and adherence to community guidelines.
