ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini down: What we know about the AI outages

As of the morning of September 3, reports on DownDetector indicate user error issues for three major AI services: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. While some social media users claim the morning's AI outages have mostly resolved, the OpenAI status page still shows degraded performance. OpenAI has applied a mitigation measure and is monitoring recovery.

On the other hand, Anthropic's status page reports that the Claude outage has ended, with the issue affecting Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5 models resolved as of 9:16 PT / 16:16 UTC. The cause of this outage remains unknown. A major internet outage seemingly affected major AI services on Thursday, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and Grok.

All these platforms appear to be experiencing stability and downtime issues, with thousands of users reporting outages. DownDetector shows that various AI providers, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and Elon Musk's xAI, are currently suffering from similar outages. While occasional brief outages for ChatGPT and Claude are common and usually resolve quickly, it is highly unusual for multiple AI services to experience problems simultaneously.
