Nvidia strikes $12.9bn deal to buy AI platform Hugging Face

Nvidia and Hugging Face have agreed to a $12.9 billion acquisition, marking one of the AI chipmaker's largest deals as it ventures into software development. Hugging Face, established in 2016, has gained popularity as an online platform for developers and researchers to discover, share, and test AI models and tools. Recently, concerns over AI safety emerged after rogue AI agents appeared on the platform following an incident.

The deal would incorporate Hugging Face, one of the world's largest AI developer communities, into Nvidia, granting control over a leading open-source platform that competes with offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. Nvidia, renowned for crafting advanced chips used in AI training and execution, has seen a surge in demand due to companies racing to develop AI products.

Both companies collaborate on aiding developers utilizing Nvidia's computing services via the platform. According to the companies, Hugging Face is utilized by more than 18 million developers and hosts over three million AI models, with more than 200,000 companies leveraging the platform. Nvidia will pay Hugging Face investors approximately $11.9 billion and offer up to $1 billion in stock-based incentives to employees joining the company.

The acquisition will not necessitate users to use Nvidia's chips or services. Instead, Hugging Face will continue to remain open to developers, ensuring users can freely utilize the platform. This deal might also bolster Nvidia's position in AI software, as some of its significant customers, such as Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI, continue to develop their own chips.

Open-source AI models can be downloaded and modified by users, unlike many AI systems controlled by a single entity. Advocacy group Consumer Choice Center's deputy director, Yaël Ossowski, viewed the acquisition as a "vote of confidence in open AI" and suggested it could foster competition by making AI tools more accessible to startups and smaller companies.

The acquisition presents a significant victory for innovators and consumers globally if Nvidia maintains Hugging Face's openness and accessibility.
