Sexual crimes against women, kids: 80pc of offenders are people known to victims, says Punjab IGP

LAHORE: Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdul Kareem disclosed during a ‘Meet the Press’ programme that 80 percent of sexual crimes against women and children are committed by relatives or individuals known to the victims. The IGP highlighted the crucial role journalists play in detecting crimes and assisting law enforcement, calling them the 'eyes, ears and helpers' of the police.

Punjab boasts 800 police stations that serve as primary service delivery mechanisms. The IGP introduced various reforms, including automated systems, Safe City cameras, virtual women police stations, child safety centers, body cameras, and panic buttons. The police's primary mission is to provide justice to citizens, and efforts are being made to provide better relief to those visiting police stations.

The Crime Control Department has a limited scope, focusing on serious crimes, with significant reductions due to effective measures. Punishment for police corruption and misconduct will no longer be lenient. Property crimes in Punjab have nearly eliminated, and traffic systems have improved. A board for promotion from sub-inspector to inspector is expected to be convened soon, with the Elite Orientation Course for officers up to the ASP rank.

Body cameras, allocated a Rs12 billion budget, were introduced with a consignment of 1,000 cameras, of which 500 are expected soon. The IGP attributed peace restoration in Katcha areas to police action and government measures, and legislation against illegal weapons is underway. The press club president bestowed a shield on the IGP, who returned the favor with police memorabilia for club members.
