Sexual crimes against women, kids: 80pc of offenders are people known to victims, says Punjab IGP

LAHORE: Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdul Kareem has highlighted the critical need for prompt action to address the surge in sexual crimes against women and children, as mandated by the chief minister. Speaking at a 'Meet the Press' event organized by the Lahore Press Club, the police chief noted that 80% of such crimes are committed by relatives or individuals known to the victims.

The IGP emphasized that crime reporters serve as crucial informants and allies to law enforcement, serving as the "eyes, ears, and helpers" of the Punjab Police. With 800 police stations across the province acting as the fundamental service-delivery mechanism for police operations, Kareem detailed several police reforms, including automated systems, Safe City cameras, virtual women police stations, and child safety centers, body cameras, and panic buttons.

The chief focused on the police's mandate to deliver justice, stating that efforts are underway to enhance the experience of citizens visiting police stations. Regarding the Crime Control Department (CCD), with its limited mandate, he affirmed that significant declines in serious crimes are attributable to proactive policing. Initiatives against corruption and procedural irregularities have already been taken, with departmental proceedings launched against officers from entry-level to senior ranks.

Kareem also announced the imminent convening of a board for promotions from sub-inspector to inspector ranks. The police force's efforts to eliminate property-related crimes and improve the traffic system were underscored, along with the allocation of Rs12 billion for body camera initiatives, with 1,000 cameras and around 500 already in circulation by Tuesday.

The IGP credited effective police strategies and governmental interventions for restoring peace in Katcha areas, and announced forthcoming legislation against illegal weapons, currently under review. Concluding the event, the Lahore Press Club president honored IGP Abdul Kareem with a shield, to which he reciprocated by presenting police memorabilia to the club.
