Police obtain four‑day remand for boat operator in fatal Mersing collision that left two dead

Johor Bahru, September 2 — A 33-year-old boat operator involved in a fatal collision that claimed two lives in Kuala Sungai Mersing last Sunday has been granted a four-day remand, as reported by the Johor police chief. The incident, which occurred on Saturday night, resulted in two fatalities and four injuries, according to the Johor police.

The suspect was apprehended by a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Mersing district police headquarters at around noon and subsequently brought before the Kota Tinggi Magistrate’s Court on September 2. The court granted a remand to allow for further investigation into the case. Although a preliminary urine test conducted on the suspect proved negative for drug use, his criminal record includes narcotics offenses.

The authorities are probing the incident under Section 304A of the Penal Code, which pertains to causing death by negligence, and Section 280, which addresses operating a boat recklessly. If convicted, the penalties under Section 304A range from up to two years in prison or a fine, while Section 280 carries a potential sentence of up to six months in jail or a maximum fine of RM2,000.

The police authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculating or disseminating unverified information and to allow the investigation to proceed thoroughly.
