Oyo threatens closure of homes, business premises over poor waste disposal

The Oyo State Government has begun enforcing its waste collection policy, warning property owners that unregistered premises may be closed. Environmental officers began inspecting homes and businesses across the state on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, revealed these details during the exercise's launch.

The government aims to enforce compliance with waste management regulations due to concerns over environmental, aesthetic, economic, and public health impacts of improper disposal. Inspectors will check if residents have proper waste bins and are registered with designated waste consultants. Premises lacking required waste bins or collection arrangements will receive 48-hour abatement notices; failure to comply will result in enforcement actions, including closure.

Aderinto urged residents to acquire appropriate waste bins, work only with approved consultants, and report non-compliant waste collectors. The government aims to improve waste collection and disposal statewide, covering residential, commercial, and other establishments.
