Mount Sinabung erupts again, over 600 residents evacuated in North Sumatra

Mount Sinabung, a volcano in Indonesia's North Sumatra province, erupted on Wednesday morning, prompting the evacuation of over 600 residents. The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation reported that the eruption started at 7:20 am local time, with an ash column reaching approximately 1,000 meters above the summit, or 3,460 meters above sea level. The grey to brown, thick ash column was observed moving towards the east and southeast. As of the report, the eruption continued.

The volcano's alert level was increased from Level II (Alert) to Level III (Standby) on Monday following visual and instrumental monitoring, which showed heightened volcanic activity. Earlier that day, the volcano sent an ash column about 3.5 kilometers above the summit, or 5.96 kilometers above sea level, triggering a warning that further increases in volcanic activity were possible.

In response to the heightened activity, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency relocated 615 residents from 211 families in Kuta Tengah to an emergency response post. The village, along with other at-risk areas, was identified due to the expanded danger zone, as recommended by the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. Within a three-kilometer radius of the summit and a six-kilometer sectoral radius towards the southeast, residents and visitors are prohibited from engaging in activities.

The Malaysian Consulate General in Medan advised Malaysians in or traveling to Karo Regency to remain vigilant, avoid areas surrounding Mount Sinabung, and follow instructions from Indonesian authorities.
