Zelensky warns Russian skies unsafe for airlines as Ukraine steps up drone attacks

On September 2, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a stern warning that Russia's airspace is becoming "completely unsafe" for international airlines and insurers due to the increasing presence of Ukrainian drones. Zelensky addressed his country's nightly audience, stating that Ukraine does not intend to endanger civilian aviation but is taking precautions given the heightened drone activity.

The number of Ukrainian drones in Russia's skies has grown significantly in recent months, disrupting air traffic and creating hazardous conditions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned Zelensky's remarks, accusing Ukraine of launching a "declaration of state terrorism." Putin urged both sides to resume negotiations, but emphasized that negotiations should not involve terrorists. In response to fresh Russian strikes that killed at least 12 people in Kyiv and the surrounding region, Zelensky reiterated Ukraine's stance, warning that the safe days in Russia's skies are now over.

Both nations have escalated their long-range attacks, with Ukraine striking Russian infrastructure and ports in retaliation for Moscow's military actions.

The ongoing conflict, now in its fourth year, has seen diplomatic efforts led by the United States largely stall. Despite Russia's acknowledgment that Ukrainian strikes have damaged infrastructure inside Russia, Putin claimed that Moscow is gaining momentum on the battlefield. He also expressed a warmer attitude towards US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who have been involved in mediation efforts between Washington and Moscow.

However, these talks have not led to a resolution, and the situation in Russia's skies remains fraught with danger.
