Bus crash in Egypt’s South Sinai kills at least 21 people and injures over 20

A passenger bus plunged off a coastal road in Egypt on Wednesday, resulting in at least 22 fatalities and 28 injuries. The tragic accident took place on the highway linking the renowned tourist destinations of Dahab and Nuweiba in the South Sinai province. Emergency responders swiftly dispatched 20 ambulances to the scene to transport the wounded to regional hospitals for medical care.

However, the exact number of passengers on the bus remains unknown. While the Egyptian Ministry of Health did not disclose the victims' nationalities at first, Jordanian reports later revealed that up to ten Jordanian citizens perished in the crash. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jordan subsequently confirmed the death of its nationals.

Media outlets stated that the bus was en route to Amman from Cairo when the mishap occurred. The cause of the accident remains undetermined, although local reports hinted that a tire burst may have triggered the bus to overturn. Egypt has been grappling with a series of deadly road accidents due to widespread transportation safety issues, including speeding, substandard road maintenance, and lax enforcement of traffic regulations.

In 2025, nearly 6,000 road fatalities were recorded by Egypt's Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, alongside tens of thousands of injuries. This incident follows a series of major transportation disasters in Egypt, including a lorry collision in northeastern Ismailia governorate that killed 18 people and injured 30 others, a massive multicar pileup near Beni Suef claiming 21 lives, and another major transit disaster north of Cairo that resulted in 32 deaths and 63 injuries.

These recurring catastrophes underscore the urgent need for comprehensive transit reform through significant investments in highway engineering and stringent commercial vehicle compliance to safeguard lives in densely populated regions.
