At least 22 killed in a passenger bus crash in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula

At least 22 people, comprising Egyptians and Jordanians, lost their lives in a passenger bus crash in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday, according to authorities from both nations. An additional 28 individuals sustained injuries in the incident. The crash occurred on a road connecting the coastal tourist destinations of Dahab and Nuweiba in South Sinai province.

The Egyptian Health Ministry dispatched 20 ambulances to the scene to transport the deceased and wounded to nearby hospitals, though the ministry did not specify the victims' nationalities.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry reported that among the fatalities were Jordanians, though the ministry did not provide a specific death toll. The Amman-based al-Mamlaka public broadcaster claimed that 10 Jordanians perished in the accident. According to the broadcaster, the bus was en route from Cairo to Amman when it flipped over on a road between Dahab and Nuweiba.

While the Egyptian health ministry did not elaborate on the cause of the crash, local media speculated that the bus overturned after one of its tires burst. Egypt has a poor transportation safety record, and deadly traffic accidents claim thousands of lives annually in the country. Contributing factors to such incidents often include speeding, poor road conditions, and inadequate enforcement of traffic laws.

In January, 21 people were killed and 16 injured in a major multicar collision on a road near the southern province of Beni Suef.
