Thailand shortens visa-free stays for dozens of nations from Sept 15

Bangkok, Thailand will reduce visa-free stays for tourists from over 60 countries and territories to just 30 days starting September 15, according to the foreign ministry. The move aims to reduce crime involving foreign nationals, as recent arrests involved foreigners accused of drug offenses, sex trafficking, and operating businesses illegally.

Currently, travelers from more than 90 countries, including European Schengen area members, China, India, the United States, and several South American nations, can visit Thailand for up to 60 days without a visa. The shorter visa-free period will affect over 60 countries, including China, the United States, and 27 EU countries.

The exact visa-free status for around 20 other nations remains unclear. Visitors from Peru, Brazil, and South Korea will receive 90-day visa-free stays, up from 60 days previously. Tourists can extend their stays once, at the discretion of an immigration officer. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow revealed this plan in May as part of a crackdown on individuals exploiting the visa system for criminal activities.

Since the start of the year, Thailand has welcomed 20.9 million foreign tourists, a 3% decrease compared to the same period in 2025, according to official figures.
