Taufiq admits gaps, communication breakdown with Azizulhasni

Youth and sports minister Dr Taufiq Johari has admitted to communication breakdowns and gaps in coordination regarding national track cycling star Azizulhasni Awang's pursuit of a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics (LA28). The minister acknowledged that his ministry bears responsibility for the issue and vowed to prevent similar communication failures from happening in the future.

During a press conference following an MSN briefing on the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and LA28 qualification process, Taufiq emphasized the importance of good communication between the ministry, Azizulhasni, and the National Sports Council (MSN) to avoid controversy and confusion in society. The decision to allow Azizulhasni to continue his LA28 quest was made at an MSN board meeting on August 13 after Taufiq directed the council to evaluate the matter.

MSN subsequently issued an offer letter supporting Azizulhasni's participation in the LA28 on August 15, which the cyclist accepted.

In resolving the matter, Taufiq noted that future steps should involve discussions among Azizulhasni, the cycling association, MSN, and the National Sports Institute to determine the necessary assistance and support for the athlete's LA28 preparations. The minister plans to organize a series of meetings and town halls with athletes to identify and swiftly address any issues.

Azizulhasni recently shared a nine-page statement on Instagram outlining the LA28 qualification process and his career's future, seeking clear answers from the ministry and MSN regarding his continued involvement in the Olympics. MSN denied any disregard for Azizulhasni's plans or failure to acknowledge his contributions, stating that it has consistently supported the cyclist, including his preparations for the LA28.
