Nine killed, over a dozen injured as Russia strikes Kyiv region for sixth successive day

Kyiv and surrounding areas suffered significant losses as Russian air strikes continued for a sixth day on Tuesday, September 1, 2023. The attacks resulted in nine deaths and over a dozen injuries, according to authorities. In Kyiv city, eight people were killed, including three children, and fires broke out in various locations.

Boryspil, within the Kyiv region, saw one fatality and nine more injured after missiles and drones struck an apartment building and a business facility. Governor Tymur Tkachenko reported the incident on Telegram. The relentless strikes are causing widespread disruption, with air raid alerts affecting much of Ukraine. Russia has also targeted energy and logistics facilities, and on Tuesday, the border crossing into Romania at Orlivka on the Danube river was halted.

In Russia, a drone attack ignited a fire in the port area of Ust-Luga, a key export hub, while Moscow responded by repelling drones. In the Samara region, an air strike damaged civilian facilities in the oil refineries area, located about 800km southeast of Moscow. Both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians intentionally. Meanwhile, high-level diplomacy continues as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with US President Donald Trump's envoys, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged an end to the war.

NATO members, particularly those bordering Russia, are enhancing their military readiness following the ongoing conflict and increased drone incidents. Estonia, a NATO member, briefly activated air defenses due to drone activity near Leningrad region, where Russia's Ust-Luga port is situated.
