“고등학생 된 것 같아”…MLB 통산 67홈런 최지만의 KBO 드래프트 도전

At the national baseball training camp, which has been drenched in rain since the early morning, 20 players from diverse backgrounds gathered to challenge the KBO's inaugural draft. Among these participants were six pitchers and 14 infielders who had experience in independent leagues, domestic and foreign university baseball, and U.S. professional baseball.

The players donned their respective uniforms and underwent batting, fielding, ground ball, and pitching tests in indoor and outdoor training facilities. The most attention was drawn to 35-year-old Korean-American MLB star 최지만 (Ulsan Wais). Following his release from the New York Mets in 2023, 최지만 has been playing for 울산 in the Futures (2nd) league since June.

The 21st, when the 2027 KBO Rookie Draft is scheduled, will be a pivotal day for 최지만, who expressed delight at being noticed by scouts as if he had become a high school student, stating, "I felt like a teenager now," and, "I'm a bit nervous, but I'm glad I finished well." 초기에 지명이 있을 가능성이 높다고 판단되며, 불릴지 여부가 관건이다. 한 스카우트 덧붙였다, "Meiji League veteran 최지만은 신인들과 수준이 다르다. 직접적으로 경기에 투입될 수 있는 훌륭한 선수"며, "구단마다 상황이 달라서 매력적인 선택지가 될 수 있다"고 열렬히 말했다. 최지만 자신도 이러한 관심을 인지하고 있다, "지명 순서는 상관이 없다.

1라운드에는 청소년 선수들이 뽑혀야 한다"며, "청소년 대표팀 선수들이 경기하는 모습을 보면서 정말 좋은 선수들이 많다고 느꼈다. 제 실력을 의심하는 것이 아니라, 어린 선수들이 상위 순번에 지명돼 계약금을 많이 받았으면 한다. 나는 계약금도 없기 때문에 8라운드 정도에 뽑히면 좋겠다"고 웃었다. 울산을 향한 최지만의 애정이 밝혀졌다, "시즌이 끝나면 드래프트가 있고, 다음날 플레이오프가 시작돼 고민"이며, "팀이 플레이오프에 가게 되면 (일정상) 드래프트 현장에 못 갈 수도 있다. 울산을 잠깐 거쳐 가는 팀으로 생각하지 않는다. 무조건 우승하는 것이 목표"라며, "드래프트에서 제 이름이 나오면 좋겠다"는 마음을 표명했다.
