NEW YORK, Sept 1 — Seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz made a winning return to competitive tennis at the US Open on Monday, defeating Russian Roman Safiullin 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 19-year-old, who had been sidelined with a wrist injury since April, expressed his joy at competing again at a special venue, stating, "Being able to step on the Arthur Ashe, being able to compete again, I couldn’t decide to come back in a better tournament."

Alcaraz, who won the Australian Open last month, aims to bookend his season with major titles. Meanwhile, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka safely advanced to the second round with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Camila Osorio. Despite battling with 23 unforced errors, Sabalenka showcased her aggressive play and powerful groundstrokes to secure victory.
