'Massive' Russian attack on Kyiv, surrounding areas kills 4

Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and its surrounding regions resulted in at least four fatalities and more than a dozen injuries, according to Ukrainian officials. The assaults occurred as children were preparing to resume their education after a summer break, and as authorities ramped up security following fears of additional Russian attacks.

Kyiv's regional military chief, Tymur Tkachenko, reported the intense assault on social media. Multiple explosions and flashes were observed in the capital early Tuesday, following an air force alert about incoming ballistic missiles. The Ukrainian military administration confirmed three deaths and five injuries from the assault on the capital, while Boryspil, east of Kyiv, suffered damage to a business, leaving one dead and another wounded; eight more were injured when a residential building was hit.

The Ukrainian air force had previously warned of the ongoing threat of ballistic weapons and other forms of attack against Kyiv and the region, urging residents to stay in shelters. As Ukrainian children were set to return to school, the Kyiv regional military administration cautioned against holding large events in high-risk areas.

Kyiv and its surrounding areas have faced persistent Russian drone attacks in recent weeks, with fighter drones exacerbating the danger and triggering up to a dozen air-raid warnings daily. A weekend strike on an ammunition depot in Kyiv's suburbs killed 38 people, and both sides have intensified long-range strikes, targeting infrastructure like warehouses, businesses, oil facilities, and ships, leading to an increase in civilian casualties.

Ukraine has faced a shortage of interceptor missiles, particularly American-made Patriot systems designed to counter ballistic threats. Russian strikes also killed six people in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Moscow region was targeted by 600 drones overnight, with three people wounded, according to the mayor's report.
