‘Massive’ Russian attack on Kyiv, surrounding areas kills 4

A massive Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv and its surrounding areas claimed at least four lives and left more than a dozen wounded, Ukrainian officials reported on Tuesday. The strikes coincided with children's return to school after the summer break, while officials heightened security measures due to fears of further Russian assaults.

Kyiv regional military administration chief Tymur Tkachenko relayed the news via Telegram, stating that three individuals were killed in the capital and five more were wounded. Reports emerged of a business hit in Boryspil, east of Kyiv, resulting in one fatality and another injury. Eight additional people sustained injuries when a residential building came under attack.

The Ukrainian air force had previously cautioned of the persistent threat of ballistic weapons and other forms of attack against Kyiv and the region, urging residents to remain in shelters. As Ukrainian children began their new academic year on Tuesday, military authorities cautioned against organizing large events in high-risk zones.

Kyiv and its surrounding areas have endured relentless pressure from Russian drone assaults over recent weeks, with jet-powered drones amplifying the danger and generating as many as a dozen air-raid warnings per day.

In the past weekend, an attack on an ammunition depot in the capital's suburbs killed 38 people, highlighting the escalating intensity of long-range strikes from both sides. These strikes have targeted critical infrastructure, including warehouses, businesses, and oil and port facilities, as well as ships, resulting in a surge in civilian casualties. Ukraine is grappling with a shortage of interceptor missiles, particularly US-made Patriot systems designed to counter ballistic threats.
