Lee confident of HK fighting spirit in Asian Games

Chief Executive John Lee expressed confidence on Tuesday that Hong Kong's 580-strong delegation at the Asian Games in Nagoya can surpass past achievements. The Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) officially handed the SAR flag to the contingent at an event. Lee cited Hong Kong's outstanding performances in previous Asian Games, particularly at the last edition in Hangzhou, where they set a record with eight gold, 16 silver, and 29 bronze medals.

He emphasized the team's fighting spirit from last year's National Games and expressed his belief in achieving even better results at the Asian Games. Lee highlighted the importance of the Games as a platform for cultural understanding and friendship. Committee president Timothy Fok acknowledged the logistical challenges posed by the multi-city format but assured support for the athletes in both on and off-field matters.

The contingent's chef de mission, Wong Po-kee, pointed out the reduced number of athletes compared to the 2023 Hangzhou Games, but noted that they aim for results comparable to the previous edition. Most athletes are scheduled to depart for Japan on September 16 and 18. Star fencer Edgar Cheung, a two-time Olympic champion and Asian Games gold medallist, aims for a breakthrough in the team event, hoping to turn his World Championships silver into an Asian Games gold.

Another athlete, Ryan Choi, is recovering from an injury and plans to step onto the piste in peak condition by the Games.
